High-End Pillows: When To Change Them?

Even if it is not the largest element of bedding and does not concern the whole body, the pillow has a primordial place. All it takes is a pillow that is ill-suited to your needs or aging to realize this. Sleep is much less comfortable and restorative. Indeed, if discomfort in the neck, or even pain, appears, then you may wake up or sleep superficially.

There are several signs that it's time to change your high-end pillow. Find out how to recognize them and when after purchase to expect them.

How Often To Change Your High-End Pillow

A first thing to know about changing your pillow is that wear and tear is a natural process and you should expect to see your high-end pillow lose its beauty over the years.

While a mattress can last 10 years, this is not necessarily the case for a pillow. This depends of course on its initial quality and the use made of it, but assume that a high-end pillow can be changed after 3 years of use. This period can increase or decrease depending on the technology of the pillow (synthetic, memory foam, down/feathers, etc.).

A high-end pillow is normally made of higher quality materials. This should therefore allow you to exceed the 2 years of life of some pillows (or even the 6 months of use of an entry-level synthetic pillow).

Note: Diamond Supreme Foam offer high end cervical pillow for neck pain relief

So, depending on the type of high-end pillow chosen, consider the following frequencies for a change:

  • Synthetic pillow: if you have chosen a good quality pillow (with hollow fibers, for example), aim for 2-3 years old
  • Memory foam pillow: the particular composition of memory foam allows you to keep this type of pillow longer, around 5-7 years old
  • Latex pillow: just like memory foam, latex allows you to make your pillow last for several years between 4-6 years
  • Down and feather pillow: Some models can last up to 10 years, but check for signs of early sagging just in case

This frequency cannot be applied to all high-end pillow models from all manufacturers. The main thing is obviously to observe the condition of your pillow yourself over the months. Based on this, you will be better able to estimate whether changing it is worth it.

Signs That It's Time To Change Your Pillow

Observing the condition of your high-end pillow and estimating how it feels during sleep are the two main indicators to know if it's time to replace it. The frequencies for changing your pillow are indicators, but they do not perfectly determine in advance what the condition of the pillow will be after a certain time. Indeed, the use of a pillow can be very varied (secondary bed pillow, pillow for a person who is very often bedridden, pillow for a child who has fun fighting with it, etc.) and this obviously implies a different level of degradation.

So what are the signs that tell if your pillow is at the end of its life? First of all, there are the physical manifestations of the high-end pillow:

  • Deformation: the corners or faces become deformed and cause discomfort when you put your head on them
  • Loss of loft or comfort: a firm pillow that becomes soft, a swelling and fluffy pillow that becomes flat...
  • Persistent stains or odors: Despite regular maintenance, you notice unpleasant odors coming from the pillow or persistent stains due to sweat or saliva
