When to Replace Brake Pads and Other Common Parts

Brake Pads
Periodic and proper vehicle maintenance helps keep your car running safer for longer. There are several parts of the car that need regular maintenance and should be checked on frequently.

Brake Pads

One of the most important safety elements on your vehicle is the brakes. Brakes rub against the brake rotors to slow down and stop your vehicle. The brake pads take the brunt of this friction, so over time they wear down and should be replaced.

Generally, brake pads have built-in indicators that let you know when they are getting low. When you hear them screech, that’s a good sign that they are going to need to be replaced soon.

Even if you just bought a new Ford for sale, you should visually inspect your brakes every so often through the spokes of your wheels. If the rubber is less than a quarter of an inch thick, you should replace the pads. Any grooves or uneven wear may also indicate other problems you should look at.

Oil and the Oil Filter

Oil helps lubricate the parts of your engine to reduce friction and keep things running smoothly. You should change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or so, but this depends on your make and model, the type of oil you use, and how much you drive. Some newer vehicles that use synthetic oil can sometimes wait up to 7,500 miles before getting an oil change.

The oil filter should also be replaced every time you change the oil.

Tires

The part of your vehicle that makes direct contact with the road is the tires. Maintaining them will keep you safer as you drive, and even help you get better gas mileage.

You should replace your tires when the tread wears down. Some people use the penny test. Insert a penny with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can still see the top of his head, then you should replace your tires. Or, you can measure. Tires with a tread of less than 2/32 should be replaced.

Air Filter

You should check up on your air filters regularly, as well. These filters keep the air that enters the engine clean so that contaminants don’t build up inside.

Filters should be replaced every other oil change. This is especially true if you live in a polluted area or an area with a lot of dust. Normally, air filters should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, depending on the environmental conditions in your area.

Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are components that help your car start. They can become worn over time and should be replaced. Check them close to 30,000 miles and 100,000 miles to ensure they are in good condition. This will help you avoid misfires or engine damage.

Keep a Regular Schedule

Maintaining your car on a regular schedule ensures your safety and improves performance. Becoming familiar with manufacturer recommendations and signs of wear and tear can help you stay on top of repairs and parts replacement. This, in turn, can help your vehicle last longer, ride smoother, and give you peace of mind every time you go out.
